[BLUE]Background: Brought in stray by finder on 9/3/26 along with two small dogs.B Finder reported that they had the dogs in their home for four days and noted bx00they are friendlybx00 and bx00they get along with others.bx00 The dogs were calm/relaxed in the car. Given Blue dot on intake. Intake staff noted dog was very shut down/terrified. Urinated while thrashing around on the leash. Intake procedures were completed very slowly. Dog had whale eye and body tension, tail fully tucked throughout. First time handling dog for evaluation on 9/9/26.O: Dog was in a half kennel. Backed away to the divider. Handler stepped in a leashed with a big loop as dog lowered itbx00s body to the floor. Once leashed, dog walked out alongside handler. Walked alongside handler while on leash, often brushing against handlers legs. Dropped leash in the yard. Dog paced the perimeter, tail tucked, lowered/tucked body language. Some darting when handler approached. Marked several times. Defecated. Chased tossed toys. Did not pick up at first, but began to relax, tail unfurled and high, sometimes wagging as dog ran to chase balls or squeaky toys. Picked up toys and returned to handler. Dropped toy and played several rounds of fetch. Dog did not approach within arms length of handler unless he was on leash. On leash dog sat near handler and was tolerant of touch. Some lip licking and whale eye. Submissive down and began to roll over onto back. Startled at handler movement and sat up again. Went into the down position and stayed near handler until handler stood. Walked at a close heel, often touching handlerbx00s legs back to kennel. Entered kennel ahead of handler. Removed slip leash using a second leash.Volunteers report that dog is playful and leans into pets with familiar handlers. Does not appear to be treat motivated at this time and has not demonstrated any knowledge of basic commands.A: Dog is somewhat shut down, environmentally sensitive and avoidant of interaction with unfamiliar handlers. Can be affiliative and shows enjoyment with pets with familiar handlers. Presents as low to medium energy. Energy level may change as dog becomes more comfortable with handling and environment. Has some training: walks to a close heel alongside handler; possibly house trained (eliminates on entering the yard). Has shown minimal interest in treats. Engages with handler while playing with toys. Blue for volunteer handling, dog is leash avoidant and uncomfortable being touched by unfamiliar handlers. Crew volunteer and whiteboard notes are consistent with staff notes.P: Make available for adoption. Adopters should continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Recommend adopters have experience with herding breeds and timid dogs. Dog may need additional time to decompress and become comfortable with handling and petting in a new home. Dog is very environmentally sensitive and may be timid in new environments which may make a home with young children less suitable.B B [2026-09-16 02:14:00.000]
